Positioned as a direct competitor to Slack and GitHub, Buzz is designed for teams that rely on both human workers and AI agents to collaborate in a single workspace. Dorsey shared the news on X, describing Buzz as “model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source.” The platform was built by Dorsey’s company Block, which also operates Square, Cash App, Afterpay, and Tidal.

What is Buzz?

Buzz is a group chat platform that brings humans and AI agents into the same conversations. It looks much like Slack, with channels, direct messages, and integrated tools, but its key differentiator is native support for AI agents. These agents can be assigned tasks, join channels, and collaborate with human team members on software development, project management, and other workflows. The platform is model-agnostic, meaning it can work with various AI models—including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and open-source alternatives—giving teams the flexibility to choose the best AI for their needs.

Other startups are also exploring this space, developing platforms that natively integrate AI agents into workplace communication. While Slack itself has introduced AI features, these are often add-ons rather than core to the user experience. Buzz and Centaur represent a new wave of tools that put AI agents at the center of collaboration, rather than as peripheral tools. For newer startups that are building their tech stack from scratch and already rely heavily on AI agents, these platforms could be more attractive than retrofitting old habits onto Slack.

Challenges and Early Stage

Despite its promise, Buzz is in its “early stages,” as the team itself admits. The app is available as a free desktop download, but it may lack the maturity and reliability that established platforms like Slack offer after years of development. Potential users should be cautious about migrating their entire team to Buzz immediately. The platform may have bugs, missing features, or performance issues that only surface in production environments.

However, the open-source community can help accelerate development. With the code on GitHub, developers can contribute fixes, features, and integrations. This community-driven approach can lead to rapid iteration and improvement, especially if Buzz gains traction among early adopters in the tech and startup communities. The emergence of platforms like Buzz signals a shift in how teams will collaborate in the future.
