Apple is reportedly making a major change to its Apple silicon roadmap. Instead of completing the M6 family with the usual Pro, Max, and Ultra variants, the company is said to be skipping those chips entirely to focus on accelerating the development of the M7 processor. According to multiple reports, only the base M6 chip will be released from that generation, marking a significant departure from the cadence Apple has followed since transitioning Macs away from Intel.

What changes with the M6 generation

The most immediate effect of this decision will be visible this fall. When Apple introduces the redesigned MacBook Pro models, they will be equipped with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the M6 Pro and M6 Max. That is a notable shift, because previous MacBook Pro refresh cycles often arrived alongside the newest Pro-level silicon. Instead, Apple is expected to pair the new chassis with the current generation of high-end chips.

At the same time, a base model MacBook Pro with the older design will be updated with the base M6 chip. This means the M6 family will exist, but only in a single form. There will be no M6 Pro, no M6 Max, and no M6 Ultra. For years, Apple has offered multiple tiers of its custom processors across the Mac lineup, with the Pro and Max versions offering additional GPU cores, more memory bandwidth, and other performance improvements. Skipping those tiers for a generation is unprecedented in the Apple silicon era.

Why Apple is skipping M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra

The decision is largely motivated by a desire to accelerate development on the M7 chip. Apple reportedly wants the M7 to debut as soon as spring 2027, rather than waiting for the typical fall 2027 window. By redirecting engineering resources away from the high-end M6 variants, Apple can bring the next generation to market sooner.

The reason for this break with tradition is artificial intelligence. Apple has been planning major neural-processing upgrades for the M7 family and ultimately decided those improvements were important enough to justify accelerating the next generation rather than completing the M6 lineup. The changes are expected to go into high gear with the M7 Ultra, which is said to dramatically upgrade AI performance and bring it closer to the class of dedicated AI accelerators such as Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture.

The AI advantage of Apple silicon

Apple has held a notable lead when it comes to running on-device AI models, largely because of its unified memory architecture. In Apple silicon, the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine share the same memory pool, which allows large language models and other machine learning workloads to access far more memory than they would on a traditional discrete GPU setup. This unified memory design has given Macs a practical advantage for local AI inference, especially as models grow larger and more memory-hungry.

With the M7 generation, Apple appears ready to push that advantage further by strengthening the Neural Engine. Historically, Apple has included the same size Neural Engine across its entire Silicon lineup, with the exception of the Ultra chip. That meant an M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max all shipped with the same 16-core Neural Engine. While not confirmed, that approach could change with the M7 family. The Neural Engine might scale according to the size of the chip, giving the Pro and Max versions substantially more AI processing capacity than the base chip.

This kind of scaling would make sense as Apple continues to invest in Apple Intelligence and other on-device features. A larger Neural Engine would allow future Macs to handle more complex models locally, reducing the need to send data to the cloud. It could also improve performance for tasks like real-time language translation, image generation, video analysis, and voice assistants.

What this means for the MacBook Pro lineup

For buyers, the immediate consequence is that the redesigned MacBook Pro will still be powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. That means the new design will arrive with current-generation performance rather than a brand new flagship processor. Some consumers may be disappointed by this, but the M5 Pro and M5 Max are likely to remain strong performers, especially for professional workloads such as video editing, software development, and 3D rendering.

The base model MacBook Pro with the older design will receive the M6 chip. This setup could make the entry-level MacBook Pro an interesting option for users who need a reliable laptop with efficient performance but do not require the extra GPU and AI capabilities of the Pro or Max variants. However, it also means that the high-end MacBook Pro models will not receive Apple’s newest chip generation until the M7 arrives.

The M7 generation and beyond

Looking ahead, the first M7 Mac is expected to be a redesigned base model 14-inch MacBook Pro in early 2027. That will be followed later in the year by an M7 Pro and M7 Max update to the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. This staggered release would give Apple time to ramp up production of the new M7 family while also allowing the MacBook Pro lineup to transition to the next generation in phases.

There are also promising rumors about the M7 Ultra, the top-tier desktop chip that is expected to appear in the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Apple’s M7 Ultra is reportedly being designed to support up to 1.5TB of RAM. That would match a feat achieved by the 2019 Mac Pro, which was Apple’s last Intel-based tower and could be configured with 1.5TB of memory. For AI development, large-scale simulation, and other memory-intensive tasks, that kind of capacity would be a major draw.

A significant upgrade on the horizon

All signs point to the M7 lineup being another major leap for Apple silicon. The combination of a redesigned MacBook Pro, more powerful Neural Engine, possible RAM scaling, and a push into faster release cycles suggests Apple is serious about maintaining its lead in on-device AI. The decision to skip the high-end M6 chips may look unusual in the short term, but if the M7 delivers the promised AI improvements, it could prove to be the right strategic move. Apple is clearly betting that the M7 generation will be worth the wait.
